The Second Mahatma Gandhi Health and Peace Walk
New York City, October 2, 2011

“In my opinion, a brisk walk in the open is the best form of exercise” Mahatma Gandhi.

October 2, 2011: The second Mahatma Gandhi Health and Peace Walk that took place on October 2, 2011 in the Marcus Garvey Park, Manhattan, New York was a big success. The first walk held on the same day in 2010 was also a success.

This year, more than 250 participants came from all over New York City, New Jersey, and in some instances, from overseas to participate in this event.

The Walk is based on the original concept created by Mr. Rahul Sur to draw inspiration from the life and example of Mahatma Gandhi --who was an excellent walker--and encourage people to walk daily with the aim of enhancing their wellness, fighting diabetes and heart disease.

Consequently, the Walk's slogan is "In His Footsteps--For Your Health."

Among the distinguished guests for the 2011 event were Mr. Manjeev Singh Puri, Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, the Director of the World Health Organization, New York, Dr. Jacob Kumaresan, the President of the Cooper Union, Dr. Jamshed Bharucha, the President of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), Dr. Sunita Kanumury and Ms. Syderia Chresfield, President of the Mount Morris Park Community Improvement Association (MMPCIA).

All the guests made inspiring and pertinent points about the life of Mahatma Gandhi and also talked about the importance of prevention in remaining healthy.

Mr. Rahul Sur, the creator of the Mahatma Gandhi Health and Peace Walk addressed the participants on the subject of Gandhi, Health and Peace.

He said that as Gandhi had said " My life is my message". Using imagination, it was easy to imagine what Gandhi would have wanted us to do today. First, he would have wanted us to do something for ourselves, as Gandhi was a self-reliant person. Second, Gandhi would have wanted us to be healthy and take brisk walks in the open, as he believed that every person had a responsibility to look after his or her body. Pertinently, Gandhi believed that walking in the open was the best form of exercise, easily accessible by all and therefore needed to be encouraged. Lastly, Gandhi would have wanted us to be peaceful, for ourselves and others. Based upon this, the best way to operationalize Gandhi was to walk long distances in peace every day. This would enable people to benefit from his giant life and help us address today’s problems in a concrete way.

After the Walk, the participants assembled for a meditation session that was led by the Art of Living Foundation.

The Walk was supported by an array of organizations working in diverse fields of art, culture, health, medicine, music, education, finance, manufacturing, real estate, tourism, community affairs, spirituality, children's and family welfare. Support for the Walk has doubled since 2010.  http://ariseindiafoundation.org
